question on 2 bearing quill

Post by Hobbyman2 »

Looking on ebay at a 2 bearing quill for my 80's mkv ,

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Shopsmith-Mark ... SwGwlaR-gz

then went to SS and the quill pictured seems to be different ,there is a plastic bushing on the tail end .

http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... gquill.htm

I dont understand the difference ?

Any help

For the difference in price, I don't think I would go with ebay on this. You have no idea what the bearings are like in the ebay model. If they need to be replaced you'd be almost at a break even point.

Buy the quill assembly from Shopsmith! The "missing plastic piece" is needed. I don't know if it available as a repair part from Shopsmith or not (I'd bet it is). Check out part number 514083 (#57 in the parts drawing).

Hmmm Price doesn't look right. I may have the wrong part.

The ebay listing is for a quill and a drive sleeve assembly http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/item ... tem=518145

I have not seen the plastic part at the end of the quill before, I suspect it is a dust shield, and a fairly new innovation.

Looks correct to me. I think of it as a splined coupler. The ring part is the spring that retains it on the drive sleeve splines.

That E-bay price seems high to me although it apparently includes the drive sleeve(not necessary).

Note the coupler is on the drive sleeve.

I do believe that the plastic piece (splined coupler) is not going to come with the quill. You are going to need one if you don't already have one. Be aware, the splined couplers are not all the same. It will depend on how old your quill is.

How many splines on your old quill? That might be tell tale.
