10er jointer cutter head 129-12x

Hey everyone, I finally got myself a nice 10er in good original working condition. It's got basically everything I want, except for one part: the jointer cutter head (it came with the fence). There's one on ebay right now, is that the way to go or is there a better source?

Getting one used is the only way to get them. It was introduced for the Model 10's and continued into the Mark 5 era until discontinued. Since it has not been made in decades there are no real new ones available. Some of the old Jointer Heads I have gotten have had little or no use. If listed with a part number it had two. The first was 129-12X from its introduction until the part numbers were changed November 19, 1951 when it became P/N 12 230. There are two versions of P/N 12 230 with the first having 1/4" set screws (is the same as 129-12X) and the later (1954 & beyond) with 5/16" set screws. It was made to be used with the Jointer Shaper Fence that replaced the table insert. A PDF of the manual for it is attached below.

It can also be used with the Shaper fence made for the original Mark 5 table system as that Shaper Fence was made to fit the Model 10 tables too. Attached is that manual as a PDF below.

Notice that in this manual it is shown in use on a Model 10.

Looking at what is for sale I found 1 with the Fence, Jointer Head, newer router chuck and a non Shopsmith 1/2" arbor. Individual Jointer heads are two priced at $50 each and one, which may be unused, at $150. I have seen them for less.

I would also consider replacing the power cord if it is the original one. After 70 +/- years they get brittle and cracked.

Mine included the metal fence that inserts in the table, just needed the cutter head. Picked one up from ebay just now.

If it needs sharping it is best to do them together. I use the Planer/Jointer Knife Sharpening set from Shopsmith. (see link below) Doing it that way all three blades are sharpened at the same time to the same size. This is important with this Jointer Head since there is no individual adjustments for the blades. Although I sharpen them on my Mark V it could be done just as well on a Model 10, I just have not tried it that way.

You can always ask questions here. We are happy to help. We love seeing pictures too. Just a point of curiosity, do you know the serial number of your Model 10ER? That gives an idea of when it was made and if the S/N has a prefix of E, ER or R where it was made. If your serial number is much higher than 69000 it won't have a prefix. The serial number prefix, if it has one, is different than the model 10E, ER or 10ER shown on the logo/serial number plate.

Serial number 78555, no prefix. Pictures attached, I think. I'm a secondary math teacher and I'm hosting a technology and distance learning training in 35 minutes, but these forums never work the way you anticipate!

The guy I bought this from went with his dad to pick the machine up new from Montgomery Wards in Fort Worth TX, 1953. His dad was a doctor and he was a dentist. Aside from hobbyist use its basically pristine considering it's 67 years old. I was pretty happy to give him the full $300 he wanted for it.

My dad had a 10ER in his shop that was only ever used as a giant drill press (don't know the serial number of that one--it was gifted to a small cabinet shop owner as dad moved and downsized). I feel a little bad about how it was treated looking back, but I've wanted to add one to my shop for quite a while.

I've already dived into most of that material. Really appreciate that the community has put so much of their time into making it available and preserving it.
