vintage slip sticks for carpentry

I have one, well the hardware for one from Lee Valley, the sticks you supply. I have never seen one with graduations, in general the idea is to not have measurements just marks.

Here are a few pictures of my latest one. This knob is how you lock the distance between ends or pins when used in that mode.

You can mark any where on the sticks or use the ends or use the pins which can be placed any where along the sticks. Here is a shot of the pins at the sliding end:

The wood can be just about any length, here is a shot that will give you the idea of how long mine is:

You can make whole projects without measurements using these. You don't need to buy the hardware as a diy version will work just as well.

Then the other interesting thing is this story tape. It was an April Fools joke that became an actual product. Like the sticks the tape is without measurements until you mark it. The marks wipe off and is ready for the next project..... just take care while using it to not have that happen.

The tape also came from Lee Valley.

I have the Rockler 3-in-1 Bar Gauge. Similar but uses 3/8" dowels.

those are all nice !!

I have a set that are at least 5 ft long and fully extend from that , nearly 10 ft but they are well over 100 years old , my GGF used them but I wont use them because there age , they are graduated , I havent seen any new ones that offer graduations either, or any that long . I was hoping some one would know of something metal with bold graduations.

years ago a two story house had studs running from the bottom plate to the top plate , they would use these sticks to mark the 2nd floor joist and ceiling joist , windows doors so they would all be level . The stick below built several country churches and a few old farm homes in central ohio

Yes pricey but they are very nice, I got this very one for marking up sheets of plywood. They do have markings but if you are having trouble seeing rules then these will not help much. Basically a rule with stops.

Thanks every one , I believe the white print would help a lot , I may spring for the hardware and make my own short stick .
