Salt and Pepper

I was in Phoenix last weekend and stopped by Woodworkers Source. Love that place. I found a 12/4 end cut of cherry in the bargain bin. Perfect size for a set of salt and pepper mills. I got the blanks bored out and none base turned today.

My friend who is a chef and I have made several mills for brought up an interesting point which I had never considered. When you make the mills too alike it is hard to tell whether you are grabbing the salt or the pepper. The only difference if they are turned identical is the P or S on the top knurled nut which is pretty small. He requested this set have a distinct difference between the two which prompted me to make a replacement top for the pepper mill. I used a small block of walnut burl for the pepper.

Nice work! Hey, where did you get your grind mechanisms from? I have never done one of these, but like the idea of gifting some to family. On the salt versus pepper, you can also do different heights for the pepper versus salt. A friend of mine in France sent me a nice Peugeot set as a gift a few years ago. The set came with the salt being about 2" taller than the pepper. Other than the height difference, the two look almost identical but with proportions scaled of course. Just another option if you want to keep the wood species the same. Your solution looks great though, too.

You’re right JPG. I had to modify the other one to match the black walnut one. The black walnut piece sort of dictated the size. I get the mechanisms from Woodriver ( Woodcraft ). You can get them on Amazon also. They are fun to make and pretty easy to do on the SS.

Thanks! I like the stainless steel models at the website you posted. I will have to bookmark it and plan this for a future project. Also, they have a good selection of lengths available too.
