Awhile ago I had posted about a belt grinder I made for the Shopsmith:
http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/viewt ... er#p152080

Well, I have modified it; I have simplified the
base/bearing area where the vertical member
attaches to the horizontal and now the grinder can
be swiveled from the vertical back to a horizontal
work position. This is better for some grinding tasks
and allows use of the drive wheel as a grind stone with
easy replaceable grit size. Belts are 1" or 2"x42" up
to 60" long. The drive and belt tension wheels are now
metal.
This bearing in a pipe T sits in a plywood clamp:

Here it is vertical:

Here it is rotated to horizontal:

I like the overall look of this version better, and it runs
great.

I like it! Will this also be in a magazine article? I loved seeing your published stuff.

I've been using my Strip Sander for a lot of blade sharpening lately. Along with the Power Pro down to under 500 rpm, no worries on "bluing" the tempered tips.

Thanks for your comments. The editor of Machinists Workshop magazine has advised that they are interested in publishing the draft write up I sent them, but they have a lot of other articles in their list, so it will be many months before they get to it. The magazine comes out six times a year. I have to finalize the writing and take some better photos too.

I want to add a mount for my home made chisel sharpener this weekend. It is fun planning a project like this and then building it.

After brief use, realized the belt should be on the left side away from the drive connector, to make belt changes easier (d'oh). So I moved everything over:

The nice thing about this design is that you could mount it on the way tubes instead of using the SPT mount. Doing so would allow you to run another SPT at the same time (ie: 6" belt sander -> belt grinder -> MK5 -> sanding disk).

My article titled "Nifty Belt Grinder Modifications" was finally printed in the June July 2017 issue of Machinist's Workshop" magazine. They do a nice job of publishing the article integrated with the photos I sent them. I thought you guys might enjoy seeing it, powered by a Shopsmith of course!
