The Jointer Mounting Kit instructions doesn't mention powering it as a separate unit. http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/detail.aspx?id=2704csxeng wrote:In the owners manual it does have plans for a bench to have it as a stand-alone machine. I believe it also says something about what motor and pulley to use.badtheba wrote:I wonder if Magna originally planned the 4E to be able to be run standalone. I haven't seen that in old marketing materials yet, but maybe someone else knows. It has bosses in the casting to be able to bolt it to a table or stand, so it would make sense to run it directly from its own motor. Of course that mounting method would make the jointer headrest unnecessary, so I'm not discounting this individual's ingenuity. As someone else mentioned, we don't know the motor RPMs, so with the right pulley setup it might already be in the best range. Isn't 6000-7000 recommended for this size jointer?csxeng wrote:
I bet at one time the jointer was an add on but the person couldn’t find the motor extension and the 5 inch pulley kit. So it was this setup that was used. Very ingenious setup as long as it works. All on one bench!

The Jointer Manual has plans for a separate stand, it says this was to meet requests after the fact.
The unit under discussion appears to have a 2" pulley on the jointer and a 3" pulley on the motor. A 3450 rpm motor, in this configuration, would turn the jointer at 5175 rpm, which is right in the ball park for the recommended speed of 5000 rpm.

FWIW, the 5" pulley and adapter are readily available from Skip Campbell at MKCTools.com.csxeng wrote:I bet at one time the jointer was an add on but the person couldn’t find the motor extension and the 5 inch pulley kit. I have to question the pulley setup on the jointer though. Typically the motor would have a 5" pulley. But since I don't know the rpm of the motor...

I have a Shopsmith 10 E #2877 that I need to dispose of due to the loss of my storage garage. It is free! I have some accessories for it. Casters, wooden base, and scroll saw. This unit sat unused for a number of years before I got it but started right up as it did for me today. If you come to get it you have to bring a friend as I cannot lift anything after some shoulder surgery that included detaching and moving a torn bicep. I will not ship this to Seattle so please don't ask. I cannot meet you half way. It's free and I'll give you what I have that came with it. time is of the essence!

Re: Heads Up - Bargain 'available'
The idea of mounting the Model 4E Jointer on a stand instead of the Model 10E or 10ER as being an afterthought is interesting. The Base/Out-feed table already had the 3 mounting holes used to mount it to the table as shown in the manual. There is no other apparent use for those holes.
The 4E Jointer using the headrest mounting and the 5" pulley setup runs at about 5000 RPM's. It uses an 1-3/4" Pulley on the jointer. Another case of the size of a part not being included in most printed materials. Kind of like the size of the speed changer belts.

Re: RE: Re: Heads Up - Bargain 'available'
That's what I felt about it. Was it that way from the first casting though, or was that too revised? I know mine has the holes, and (being new to SS) I always figured it must have been intentional from the start. I just hadn't noticed it in any documentation until the posted manual page in this thread.chapmanruss wrote:The idea of mounting the Model 4E Jointer on a stand instead of the Model 10E or 10ER as being an afterthought is interesting. Is it possible that the holes were there to hold the casting in place during the initial machining process, and just repurposed to hold the jointer to the stand?chapmanruss wrote:The idea of mounting the Model 4E Jointer on a stand instead of the Model 10E or 10ER as being an afterthought is interesting. Look what showed up now! From the same seller. The only part that sold was the hinge plate, the rest were relisted and then this appeared.csxeng wrote:On Ebay!
4E Jointer, Henge Plate and Headrest by the same seller.
I might have posted this in the wrong place earlier.

Bargain 'available' - 510/Bsaw/BeltSander/J/Planer/DC3300 $1250
https://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/t ... 20363.html
I'm just drawn to good bargains, even though they are too far away from me to get. I still check the LA/San Diego area looking for small gems that I might be able to have a nephew get and send to me and saw this with a LOT of SPTs and other nice accessories. Needs some TLC, but overall looks pretty good.
EDIT 2/5/19: Asking price has dropped $100 to $1,250
