Sawsmith 2000 (not RAS) owner is looking for some parts.

Hi Folks,
I am new to the forum.

I have owned my Sawsmith 2000 for about 6 months or so now. It needs some parts.
I think this saw is almost perfect. I have realized there is barely any support or parts for this thing. I would love to "restore it" and use this piece of equipment.

The bad:

1.)The "carriage lock thread " that holds the saw in place (not the spinner that locks) but the actual plastic threaded piece that the "pole" goes into and the spinner locks in with force was broken. I "fixed" with JB weld. I am not too comfortable about the fix. It works but like I said it was JB welded. I am looking into machinists or maybe it can be 3d printed. dunno..

2.) Miter gauge that came with it is not original. I have on on the way and understand the 510 miter gauges are compatible with the 2000.

3.) The Bevel lock was broken, fixed with JB weld but would like to find a replacement.

4.) The wheel that aligns the bevel is broken off. looking for a replacement or engineer something.

5.) Not sure how the blade guard goes in. (really need a manual)

6.) Excalibur fence needs tweaking is not totally aligned.

The good
1.) overall it seems to run fine cutting what I need it too.
2.) dado arbor and accessories are all there.
3.) have miter stops

Any help and insight is greatly appreciated. My apologies for not using proper SS nomenclature.

Thanks,
Crab

I think it is a good project too however, I do not think I have ever owned/restored something that had parts that were so hard to find.
I will probably wind up fabricating parts for it :-(.

Anybody have a manual I can buy off of them for this piece?

Who owns these things?

How did the SS 2000 become such a lost cause?

I am still hopeful :-)

Here you go... Link for purchasing the manual from Shopsmith (if still available)

Sawsmith 2000 FAQs

http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/faq/sawsmith2000.htm

As earlier stated, parts availability is next to nil, SS did a fire sales on the last of the parts they had for the Sawsmith 2000 a few years ago. Only common parts with other existing SS systems might still be had (not many of those either). The biggest challenge will be fashioning a solution to lock the blade into one position along it's range of travel front to back.

Thanks a lot for the information.

I was able to fix the threaded lock and it does lock and I have tested but like I said how long can I trust JB weld right.

This thing is built so tough but one of the main components (locking mechanism) is cheap plastic.

I have a miter on the way so I can utilize the RAS type feature.

Looks like I can buy the manual.
thanks again I have only "met" two other people on the net that have this thing.

Thanks,
Crab

I just pick one up yesterday. Same thing, the Cambridge plastic broke, as soon as I turned it. So brittle. Also, can you look at the start capacitor, as mine is missing and I have no clue to what size or what wires plugin to what.
Thanks for your help

The capacitor on my Sawsmith 2000 reads as follows

Aero M
161 - 193 MFD
110 V
677-9110-02
FSA1R10161N ( I think)
orange & maybe red go to capacitor

Thanks. That appears to be the same capacitor as used on many of the Mark V motors. I hope to see the 2000 later this week.

(UPDATED 4-17-24)

I've been repairing some of the problem parts you mentioned by reverse engineering and then designing them in CAD and printing them with PETG plastic (strong like ABS but UV resistant) on my 3D printer. (I know the original post was 6 years ago, but in case new folks are coming here...)

Here are some of the parts I've successfully designed and replaced on my system. While 3D printed PETG is pretty strong, I recommend not over torquing. That being said, I have not had any issues. I include a 1 year warranty, for just the cost of postage.

SAWSMITH 2000 Carriage Locking Collet 516457
SAWSMITH 2000 Carriage Collet Plate 516459
SAWSMITH 2000 Replacement for Bevel Lock and Carriage arm lock

The new Bevel and Carriage locks are beefier on the twist paddles and the overall thickness and the shaft region with the 3/4"-10 threads.

Pictures are attached.
You can find my at chadwallsvcs.com. Just submit a contact me note and we can see if I can help out.
I've made an updated (corrected) version of the 516457 Locking Collet after another member showed me an actual one (I only had my broken version.)

Best Regards,

Chad
