Mark VII - Another journey begins

I picked up a Mark VII Sunday and will be refurbing it and will post pix etc as it goes. I like MickyD's index at the top of his journey(s) and will do the same here. I will split it into different threads as each major area is undertaken(so as to not create a humongous thread).

A few words about how I intend for this 'collection' to be used. One can begin from this thread and link to each of the 'sub' threads. Clicking on the 'return' arrow will bring you back to this 'top' thread. Using the 'close tab' function avoids the creation of a bunch of extra tabs. The link to this thread at the bottom of each 'sub' thread is intended to point here for those who encountered the 'sub' thread by other paths(search function etc.)

I am creating a second 'master' thread for the reassembly of the Mark VII.

A O Smith Motor........................ 17 x 40 x 12 mm - same as all but Emerson 1 1/8 which has one with 5/8" id.

Quill ......................................5/8" x 35mm x 11mm - same as M5/V etc.

Idler shaft(2 bearings).....................Same as quill bearing *

* did not determine when assembled - appears as described after assembly.

Tension pins:

Speed control cam to shaft...................... 1/8" x 3/4"
Speed control cam follower..2 pins............. 1/8" x 1/2"
Carriage - headstock connect stop............ 1/8" x 1/2"

There are several design details that were a precursor to the Mark V 505-520.
The table height crank and lock.
The carriage lock.
The shaper fence mounts to two holes in the main table.

MVIIJOURNEY

When examining the condition of 'the cam' I discovered a surprise = it is cast aluminum. Paperwork indicates the cam was purchased in 1990 with a few other parts.

Also indicated in this pix is the other less desirable 'surprise'. The control sheave is not 'whole'. Hopefully JB Weld etc. will remedy that.

Not sure where the fuzzy wuzzy stuff came from nor if it indicates another problem.

Sure would be great to figure out who made it and where it came from.

It came from CA in 1990. Letter states that all parts were scavenged and there were only a few left. A control sheave was also obtained at that time.

Great information, here, JPG. Having never seen a Mark VII in person, I'm enjoying the teardown and the detailed pictures.

One suggestion I'd like to make however, would be to keep all of it in one thread instead of a separate thread for each component.

I understand that suggestion, but I made a conscious decision to do it the way I have started.

My 'thinking' is that the individual threads can provide quicker answers than having to read down through a humongous thread.

This does have a potential problem if one is continually linking to the 'sub' threads and linking back from them rather than closing the tab to return back. Each link would create a new tab etc.

I am trying to accomplish two different schemes. One can locate the 'sub' threads with the search function or link and return to the top thread. The link at the bottom of each 'sub' thread allows one to 'discover' the top thread.

We shall see how it turns out. I am trying to avoid an extremely long thread similar to MickyD's. Not that I think this one could get that large, since I do not intend to get into detail that repeats things already posted elsewhere(rust removal techniques, painting etc.).

My main purpose is to illustrate the Mark VII details and how I managed them and to provide Mark VII references.

Brilliant idea to have come up with the sub threads. I tried it and it worked efficiently.

Obviously I'm in the minority and if this format works best for everybody else, then stick with it. I just find it chaotic and hard to follow. But that's just me and I can be ignored. :D
