In last weekend's video titled "Stupid Bandsaw Trick, Resawing & Straight Sawing with the Shopsmith Bandsaw" I did an awful job editing and left out the critical set-up that would have explained WHY someone might want to twist the blade on their Shopsmith bandsaw, and of course, some viewers noticed. I had planned on adding that "lost footage" to the follow-up mid-week episode of "Stumped Q&A", but because it was already running quite long I decided to only show the set-up but not the actual cut, and of course, some viewers noticed that too!

So here's the entire process, should you choose to attempt it. I don't recommend it, but as I say in the set-up, if you need to make this cut and all you have available to you is the Shopsmith, at least you have this ace up your sleeves!

The Jigs & Fixture Hardware you've always needed: The "Bittner Nut"

Named after the inventor, Mr. Bill Bittner, the Bittner Nut solved the problems that I always had with the knobs on my shop-made Jigs & Fixtures:
- They can be expensive,
- They can be weak,
- That can be uncomfortable to turn, thereby making them hard to tighten or loosen,
- You never have them when you need them

The Bittner Nut was shared by Bill during a Shopsmith "Sawdust Session" way back int he late 1980's and these homemade knobs have been irreplaceable in my shop ever since.

- 6:30 How to make a "Bittner Knob" (My invention)
- 9:05 The best thing about the "Bittner Nut"...
- 9:18 Bill Bittner in his own words

Watch the entire "Sawdust Therapy" video and you'll see a little more of Bill and you'll even get to meet John Keller, another of my favorite hecklers: https://youtu.be/siXRTXyRfcQ

The “Bittner Nut” is one of those “Why didn’t I think of that?” things that was just too good not to share. The “Bittner Knob” was my own mod of the “Bittner Nut” that was a real problem solver. Who hasn’t needed a knob with a male thread that was a different length than one commonly available? Thanks for sharing, Scott

All we need now is for woodpecker to make a 1/2" nut version of their knobs.(if they do not already)

I doubt they would be as cheap to purchase as a "Bittner Nut or Knob" is.

Actually I said that in jest. Fer sure the wp knob would be easier on the hands. But with the wp knob, all you need is either a single nut or a single bolt either of a lesser grade(<<$).

Besides a 1/2" scaled knob would be too big for use with 1/4" threads.

I am curious how much torque(with a 1/2" wrench) the 1/4" hex nut press fit into the threads of a 1/2" nut would take before the press fit fails. Possibly greater than the 1/4" threads can take????

Gotta make a couple to satisfy my curiosity bump!

A Video Response to Stumpy Nubs "Table Saw Blade Guard Myths BUSTED!" & Shopsmith Saw Guards

James Hamilton AKA: Stumpy Nubs posted an excellent video this past weekend talking about safety and saw guard use among Youtube content creators and the myth that using guards is somehow unmanly.

In this video response (of sorts) I go over how to install the modern Shopsmith Mark V and Mark 7 upper and lower saw guards. It's not difficult and it could save your hand.

And always remember, "Don't use remaining fingers as push sticks."

SUPER EASY Ripping Support for your Shopsmith or other DIY Table Saw. 510 vs 520 fence?

Ripping lumber (sawing the length of a board) can be challenging enough as it is, but add gravity on the outfeed side of the saw to the mix and things can get dicey fast. This super-simple to build and easy to use shop-made accessory fence will earn a place in your shop the first time you use it.

This fence any many other jigs and fixtures you will see on this channel utilizes the inexpensive and easy-to-make "Bittner Nut ", which was covered in detail in a prior video: https://youtu.be/CBCHalabqGk
