11" bandsaw side play: Ugrade?

Post by toehead »

My new to me Mark V shopsmith has the 11" bandsaw. I've noticed there is side to side play on the guide, even when locked.

Looking at the manual, the "bandsaw retainer" #70, has a nylon screw. #65, that is supposed to be used to eliminate this side play.

My retainer does not have this nylon screw.

Is the updated version a drop-in replacement?

Sorry if this has been covered before. I've searched but didn't find anything.

You could buy one or just modify the one you have. There are a few modifications that can be done to/for the bandsaw depending on how old it is.

That's just the information that I was looking for. Since the casting appears to be the same, i'll modify the one I have.
Thank you very much!

Did the upgrade with a 5/16 nylon nut, and what a difference.

This saw still isn't as sturdy as my 40's era craftsman, but it went from feeling very flimsy to feeling well made, with this small addition.

I also aligned the blade and guides while I was at it, and it cuts great now.

Thanks again.
