Mounting a router spindle underneath the table

Post by poihths »

I'd like to figure out a safe, solid way to mount a router spindle in the position show in the two photographs.

The reason I'd like to do this is to use workpieces too wide to use on the regular Shopsmith under-table router/shaper setup. The distance from the Shopsmith spindle to the waytubes limits one to about 8 inches; if you want to use a workpiece that requires a cut further than that from the nearest edge, you're out of luck, as far as I know.

I'd rather figure out a fixture than buy a router table; I'm just about at my limit for floor space.

Any ideas?

There have been several ideas posted that work and look very professional , I believe some purchased dedicated tables just for that, we chose to mount ours on a separate board/table . ours is plywood with a 1x2 frame on the underside to keep it from moving , it sets and is clamped on the main table and drops down between the main table and the extension table that way it can be removed as often as needed with out stressing the any threads you may need to drill on the main table . we had a old fence from another tool that went bad and salvaged it for the router ,it has mounting slots for minor adjustments , we just screw it down where it is needed ,it has T-slots for stops and a dust port for a vacuum . my .02

Thanks for the updated pictures. I'm afraid I can't stand on my head any more. (Grin!)

Does your fixture have a clamping arrangement underneath to hold it to the waytubes?

By the way, if you happen to be able to point me to any of those existing posts, I would very much appreciate it. I've been searching, but my keyword mojo doesn't seem to be very strong around here.

I have found key word searches a little inexact ... sometimes it is better to not be too specific in your wording, and then be prepared to wade thru many pages of results.

Using the search term "router under shopsmith", I found a few.

Good advice.

Another search technique that helps me sometimes is if I can't find it through the forum search tool, is to go to Google and search for it there. Sometimes I can find the exact thread that I need by searching Google, but using the forum search may not find it for some reason. I definitely recommend searching on the forum first, but if this doesn't work, search for the same topic on Google and add the terms "shopsmith forum" in addition to the topic of interest. Using this technique, here's another thread that might be of help:
