Finishes

Post by ryanbp01 »

I have a sewing rocker I have removed most of the finish from which I have reason to believe is shellac through scraping. I'm not wild about using chemical stripper. Would denatured alcohol make the process any easier? I'm planning on teaching myself how to cane the seat.

If the finish is shellac, then denatured alcohol will dissolve it. If it doesn’t, it’s not shellac.

Like Buckeye said, but use steel wool to remove the softened material. One nice think is it won't remove patina.
