I am fond of horizontal bi-fold doors. They open very high and then become an awning...

A lot of progress on the first two doors the last two days. I prehung them on the jambs and got them trimmed to size. They are all primed, prepped and ready for sanding before the final coat.

Looking Good!

In my own small projects I have been impressed how well painted poplar holds up to outdoor exposure. All your planning and methods look sharp.

Looking good. I'd like make a new front door to our house, but I don't think I have the skills for that level of project.

It’s been tough getting shop time due to our boat being out of the water but the project is moving forward. The first set is up and all that’s left is to paint the stucco trim which can wait for the larger door to be completed and paint all the stucco at one time. The first two of the four door unit was glued up today. The jamb for the four door unit was a challenge but we completed it yesterday.

Whew ! They are finally done and very happy with the results. The idea of supporting them at the hinge points seems to work very well.

The doors look great, Paul!

I'm still trying to figure out your comment about "supporting them at the hinge points". I assume that you're fighting a lot of weight/moment on the big bifold doors, and that the third photo is showing some detail on your solution. But I can't quite tell what's going on.

I left off one picture. What I did was make eight of those screw blocks using 7/16” all thread and I embedded coupling nuts into the blocks. The bolts are mounted to the doors at each hinge point and on each side of the doors at the point where the pairs meet. This allows me to support each door from the bottom and provides the security. The bolt go down into holes I drilled in the concrete. They also support the doors when in the open position the same way.
