Cant believe my '81 model mark 5 still runs like a dream

Post by james1726 »

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum as far as posting. I have read a lot of good information on here and I thank you folks for that.

I have a '81 (according to the serial number) Mark 5 that I bought several years ago from a Fireman who was building a house with it. When he finished he sold it to me. I later sold it to a co-worker to build a house on his farm and when he was finished I bought it back.

The serial # is 111589 which according to the chart is an 81 model, however mine has the 510 package and also the the two bearing quill. I cant believe the fireman had it upgraded so i'm wondering about that serial number if it's correct or not.

Again Thanks for all the great information.

I think you have a Mark V 510 manufactured on Nov 15, 1989.

If the Serial Number is SS-111589 than it would have been made in December 1981 and later upgraded to a Mark V 510. If it does not have the SS prefix in the Serial Number than it is a Date Code and JPG is correct. Either way it is a Mark V since the Mark 5 labeling on the machine was changed to Mark V between January and March 1980. Also the Date Code/Serial Numbers are printed on a sticker whereas the Serial Numbers are stamped on the lower edge of the Belt Cover Vent Plate.

If you get a second to snap a photo and size it down to fit in the forums, please take one of the serial number and we will know for sure.

From your description it sounded like there was an upgrade to the 510 by the buyer you sold it to, as your comment suggests you noticed the differences when you bought it back.

You would not have mentioned it otherwise I suspect.

Mystery solved!

It is a Mark V 510 made November 15, 1989

Keep it running like a Dream by following the Headstock lubrication as listed in the Maintenance section of the Manual. Also follow the waxing recommendations. This will keep it running and looking like new for years to come.

Thank you Russ,

This old gal has build a portion of at least three houses. I give it a pretty good workout almost every days sill. I have the big can of JPW and use it constantly. I'm really happy to have it back home. I saw my first SS demonstration in the middle of the mall in North Little Rock, Arkansas about a week before I was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1972. Couldn't wait to get out so I could get home and get one. Never could afford a brand new one and still cant but i'm way happy with this one over the years

I am curious now. It was a 510 when you sold it to the fireman? What did he upgrade on it?

We have determined that it was a 1989 Mark V 510 when born, so no upgrade ocurred.

Also he purchased it from the fireman. ;)
