pen question

Post by stickthrower »

Hi All. I have been off for awhile, but getting back into it. Had to split the time too many ways.

But have a question for you all.

I am looking at the pen mandrel from Penn State and am wondering, I know how it attaches to the motor, but does the other end set up against the live center, or do I have to buy another part for it to rest against?

I am hoping to get into making pens, and figure this is the best bet I have of doing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe this picture will help. You just need a live center on the tail stock.

I have and use the PSI shopsmith mandrel and the mandrel saver. They work for me.

I am putting together an order from PSI, so I am glad I asked you all! I am getting the pen mandrel, the mandrel saver, and also going to get a couple of bottle stoppers.

Does anybody use the spindle adapter? Would that mainly be for using a chuck? I was thinking about getting one, but I think that is going to wait for a later order.

I found some pens for under $2 a piece, so I got 10 total of those as well. Figure that is good to start with. I have some different woods that I am going to use and see how they turn out.

That is the only draw back, it is addictive but a lot of fun.

I agree, it is addictive but is also very relaxing and rewarding. I also love the Madrel saver and have used mine for several years.
Have fun and share your treasures.
Bill :)
