Re: Improving lighting

As we age, our blue discrimination becomes worse due to the change in absorption in our lenses (in our eyes) thus older folks tend to desire a much more Blue version of white light than do the younger crowd. As well, nordic folk tend to like very blue white :) Geographic location matters-ie what yo...

Re: A couple of old Planes

It's such a wonderful feeling planing a straight-grained piece of wood with a tuned and sharp plane. And no one will yell at you for making too much noise.

Re: Another Distraction Project - Standing Desk

My work monitor was on an arm that would go up and down, so I made a simple keyboard and mouse stand that allowed me to stand or sit when I wanted. Re: Going Political

But I seem to remember we went through a nasty political phase here not too many years ago where the posts got so vitriolic that an admin locked some of them down and suspended at least one member. There's little doubt in my mind that if we start discussing politics again, we will end up in the sam...

Re: Front Door Refresh

Just wondering if anyone has built their own wood doors for their house before? I have thought about taking it on, but not sure I can get lumber dry & straight enough to attempt it. Anyone have experience with this? I built a wood storm door. I had to order the clear fir, and I prepped it mysel...

Re: Front Door Refresh

Yeah- we got a quote from a "door" installer , actually 2 different ones. Both told us that they don't simply install doors...no they bring in the heavy lifting equipment and replace the entire door/frame and surrounding accent windows etc as a unit. They were ranging in installed costs o...

Re: Glue Joint Myths

I think it's sloppy to say that end-grain joints are stronger than side-grain joints. He didn't prove that. He proved that end-grain joints are stronger than side grain, itself (not side-grain joints). Those side grain joints didn't fails. The adjoining wood failed (which surprises none of us). We d...
