Re: Lightening Struck Lumber

From what I have read, a lightning struck tree is only good for firewood. The lightning does bad things to the structure of the tree. And live is just too short to fool around with it.

Re: Question about an old Mark V

I have owned SS's Mark V's since 1986 and my recommendation would be, on the older unit (if it works) to not pay more than $150 or so. The later model 510s and 520s are appreciably better. Of course the older units are almost completely upgradable to the later one's - one of the many virtues of the ...

Re: Green or seasoned

My answer, for any building project (other than lathe work) is that you HAVE to dry the wood first! Wood moves all the time in response to temperature, weather, humidity (i.e. water content), etc. You should ONLY work with dry wood! There are a few exceptions- weird applications where you want the w...

SS has large filter bag for DC-3300 on sale!

Just grabbed one of the 42" large, 1 micron bags for my DC-3300 which I have been waiting for. On sale until Tuesday - not a great reduction in price but certainly a worthwhile addition.

Re: Table Saw Blades

I would also think that you could reduce speed because the 'tooth velocity' (just made up that term - by this I mean the radial velocity at the tooth tip) goes up substantially, i.e. for the same blade RPM, the tooth velocity (for 12" vs 10") goes up by a the ratio of the radius (i.e. 6/5 ...

Re: "Shorty" or Lathe

Re: HP required. You would have to define the word 'large'. In a practical world, I find the Mark V's 1-3/4 HP to be a big plus. I have noticed that, in turning large'ish bowls (i.e. 10 to 11 inches) on my son's Delta 46-460 (which has a 1 HP motor), has at times struggled a bit. So, for small bowls...

Re: "Shorty" or Lathe

OK, this is where I get a bit of flack - my decision was to give up my SS (as a lathe) and buy a 'real' lathe. I was using my SS Mark V model 510 for lathe work and frankly was ready for something better after getting some time on more conventional lathe's (e.g. Delta 46-460, Nova DVR and, yes, even...

Dust collection on bandsaws

I just was looking at a YouTube video from Rob Crosman showing how he made a simple but effective dust collector for his bandsaws. Darned if it isn't a neat deal! I haven't tried a variant on my Shopsmith bandsaw but might give it a stab. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut_tqnqrRww

Re: What's up with Craigslist and SS Equipment?

On the pricing thing - I don't think that, for the one's I see in this area, it is the original owner selling them. Mostly seems to be folks who brought it or inherited it or traded for it and who now want to sell it .... at, IMHO, are quite ridiculous prices. I mean, for example, a rusty old ER for...

What's up with Craigslist and SS Equipment?

This might be true only in the Kansas City area but the listing for SS in Craigslist have gotten both low in number of offerings and very high in prices. For example, right now there are only 5 listings for Shopsmith: one a rather pathetic and rusty and incomplete ER for $200, one for a DC-3300 (lat...
