Re: Disposing of Used Solvents
Summer time I pour the used liquid into a large disposable aluminum pie plate outside and let the liquid evaporate. Fall and Winter I double line a 5 gallon bucket (that you buy from HD or Lowe’s) with plastic garage sacks, fill with kitty litter and a paper based fluid absorber. Pour in the fluid, ...

Re: Never to Old to Learn
Dusty, VERY happy that you only left a few drops of blood as a sacrifice to the wood working machine Universe! :D Decades ago I got frustrated when anything like that happened. Now I realize it’s just someone looking over my shoulder so I don’t do something more stupid and or foolish  I already...

Re: Finish for woodworking jigs & fixtures?
I use Watco when I do seal them but most of the time I just leave them bare. Paul Sehast mentioned Watco as well. Are you guys talking about their "Danish Oil" products? I see that the Watco brand includes a bunch of different products, including tung oil and wipe-on poly. https://www.rus...

Re: Canadian Woodworking Magazine
I have hundreds of pounds of a various publications in storage containers. This Fall and Winter I will go through and cut out some of the projects and articles I like the most and put them in 3 ring binders, but most will go to recycling. I still get Wood (for another couple years) but when it runs ...

Re: Wood Hardener
For Alumalite you need a pressure pot, not vacuum. The pressure compresses any air bubbles to the point of being too small for the eye to see. Interesting! I’ve just made pen blanks in flexible forms using the Alumilite and hadn’t used any pressure device. I’ve not noticed any bubbles, but that doe...

Re: stanley tape measure accuracy
Also another point that may or may not be relevant to those on this forum is that tape measures, even within the same model, are also not consistent in their errors. Case in point, a lifetime ago I had a crew making some forms for concrete work. When they were finished, each form by each worker was ...

Re: couplers
Not to intrude too much of my opinion :o , but if you have the opportunity, you might consider using one of the nylon filaments. The extruder needs to be run at a hotter temperature and the base needs to be much warmer than when using most other filaments, but the pieces are SIGNIFICANTLY stronger t...

Re: Wood Hardener
Did you use a vacuum chamber? Makes a huge difference!. I don’t have one, but have seriously considered making one to use with Alumilite. I guess that the vacuum chamber is going to be bumped up on the list. CL had a paint pot for $25 but I’ve been looking at YouTube and figure I can build one from...

Re: Wood Hardener
I’ve used Cactus Juice with good success, but it’s also very pricey at over $100 per gallon! 😱. A friend and I bought a gallon for a few projects we were working on. Mine was birch which had dried for a couple years and was beginning to get powdery. It soaked up large quantities! I also used it on s...

Re: Next steps? Pen kits
I’ve only tried one fountain pen. It was a kit from Rockler (I think). Not much different to make and turn than any other pen style, but the nib that came with it was horrible. I later found out that most who make fountain pens to sell or as a special gift that will actually be used, go through comp...
