Re: Shopsmith Mark 5/V Bearings
Correction for the Franklin 3/4 motor bearings? I have two different sizes. The front bearing is a 6202 ZZ -10 (or 6202-10 ZZ, etc. It is a 5/8in x 35mm x 11mm) The rear bearing is a 6202 ZZ -16 (or 16mm x 35mm x 11mm) instead of the 6203 zz listed in the first post. So, it seems the franklin motors...

Re: Very old shopsmith
Welcome! I showed up just over a year ago, having purchased a 1980's shopsmith off craigslist. It came with a second, broken one I believe was from 1959 (serial number plate missing). I had no real idea about them beyond the basics. I was surprised at how very well built they are and, even more so, ...

Re: Removing fan sheave? Stuck after rem. set screw (solved)
Yeah, I assumed worse after some things I've encountered on the newer one I have. This c. 1959 has been easier than the 1983 Mk V. And even after all my griping about crap I was encountering I *still* managed to dump ask the loose sawdust right in my lap. Guess I need to put tools down and sleep bef...

Re: Removing fan sheave? Stuck after rem. set screw (solved)
Ah, I missed your reply as I typed. I couldn't remove the key beforehand, too stuck, and I think that was what was binding the most. I should add that I did drop some penetrating oil when I first tried, forgot about it. So, anyone from the future here to deal with this problem on their own machine, ...

Re: Removing fan sheave? Stuck after rem. set screw (solved)
OK, so it just took a bit of knocking on the backside of the sheaves with the rubber coated handles of a pair of needle nose pliers. I had to try rather hard, but had very poor mechanical advantage so there wasn't much pressure. There was, however, more of that industrial waste crud jamming it in pl...

Removing fan sheave? Stuck after rem. set screw (solved)
I'm breaking down the Franklin Electric 3/4 hp motor from my greenie. Every bearing I've checked except, perhaps, the control sheave (water pump) bearings have been globbed with a nasty tarry mixture of layers of rancid penguin lard, dandruff, cigarette ashes, ground up trees and bong water, best I ...

Re: Speed control and ???
I want to throw out a short cautionary note... I just removed that bearing a few days ago on my greenie because it was so crunchy and noisy. I was sure I had moved/removed the metal that was forming a small rim to hold it in. I was wrong and now noticed a couple very short hairline cracks on the sha...

Re: Speed control and ???
Ah, that makes sense. I don't have a real opinion to add to those offered already regarding which to get, but I seem to recall Bill saying success in staking a new one had to do with the depth of the bored out section, whether it was deep enough to have the bearing recessed inside just a bit. If flu...

Re: Can the Shopsmith Bandsaw Be Quieted
If I understood correctly someone was confused by the mention of 'using a shim, as directed' when all the bearings are the same. I bought Bill Mayo's bearing kit and A) completely worth it! and B) he included a shim. (I also switched to cool blocks and won't go back). perhaps that is where the discr...
