Re: Maple slab coffee table
Thanks to everyone for all the good ideas. I think that I first will trace the irregular western border onto a piece of paper and then transfer that tracing to another piece of wood that I will cut to match the tracing. If that goes well, I will try to fit the slab next to the matching cutout. If I ...

Re: Maple slab coffee table
Thanks to all, for lots of good ideas, but I did not make myself clear. Here is an image of the slab, which is amazingly close to a map of Montana, where I spend part of the year: Mapleslab.jpg I do not want to cut or otherwise change the perimeter or dimensions of the slab, so splitting/cutting the...

Maple slab coffee table
I recently purchased a maple slab to build into a coffee table. The slab is a little undersized, and I would appreciate ideas as to how to give the slab additional size and heft. In particular, I would like to add to the long dimension of the slab. Would mounting the slab on top of a flat base (of w...

Forum members in Dallas area
I am retired and spend part of the year in Montana (when it is warm) and the rest of the year in Dallas, Texas. My SS is in Montana, but I have some time, and I would like to build a drum/thickness sander (like Shipwright's: http://lumberjocks.com/shipwright/blog/26701) in Dallas. If anyone has a 51...

Re: Communicating with SS owners in Dallas area
It appears that I cannot easily identify forum members by location, so I will post directly to the list.

Communicating with SS owners in Dallas area
I would like to communicate directly (via email, I imagine) with Forum members from the Dallas, Texas, area, but I cannot figure out how to use the forum software to identify members from Dallas. Is it possible to do that (other than by a post to everyone)?
Thanks, Hank
Thanks, Hank

Re: Conical disc to smooth hand plane sole?
Thanks, everyone, for the responses above. I will not use the conical disc sander. I was hoping to save some elbow grease, but sandpaper on a flat surface it is. Hank

Conical disc to smooth hand plane sole?
I have a hand plane with a sole that is not fully smoothed. I am wondering if I could use the conical sanding disc to do the smoothing. Would it be possible to build a jig (using a miter gauge bar) to hold the plane on its side as it passes over the conical sanding disc? Is this a good (and safe) id...

Re: Planer to remove polyurethane on oak floorboards?
I ended up using the conical disc, and it worked fine.
Thanks to all who responded.

Thanks, all, for your assistance. The conical sanding disc sounds perfect, and I will give it a go. Hank
