Re: Mesquite band saw boxes
Looks great! With which did you cover these wooden boxes? The boxes were finished with one coat of hand rubbed sanding sealer, rubbing the sealer into the open grain and inclusions. After sanding a wipe on coat of polyurethane was applied and sanded. The final finish was Johnson paste wax applied w...

Lathe steadyrest 2nd attempt
Some time back I decided I needed a steady rest to stabilize some spoon handles I was turning. The design was ok but didn't preform very well and was awkward to use. (first picture) For my next attempt I went with a more traditional design. It doesn't work very well with the universal tool rest base...

Re: Do you want a potpourri or are you driving?
Pictured is a tool box my father carried to work in the long Beach ship yards after WW2. The screwdriver was one he used and at some point in it's life the wood handle inserts went missing. I remember as a kid using the screwdriver without the wood inserts. I have always wanted to fix the screwdrive...

Re: Mesquite band saw boxes
Beautiful wood! I’ve never seen that type of bandsaw box, only the ones with drawers. Do you have any in-process photos that show how it’s done? I assume that you shell them out and re-glue the bottoms, in which case there must be a seam somewhere on the sides. And maybe rabbet the lids with a rout...

Re: Mesquite band saw boxes
Beautiful! Mesquite is truly beautiful. I have some curing now. I hope mine will look as good as yours! I cured the rounds with the bark on and painted the ends with a very heavy coat of latex to prevent splitting. They were left to dry for about 3 years. One tip. I think due to the narley grain pa...

Re: Mesquite band saw boxes
The dimensions are approximately 8" X 7" X 5 1/2.Dansmith wrote:Those are great. What are the approximate dimensions?
The boxes were not cut to a dimension or pattern the shape and dimension were determined by the wood grain & inclusions .

Re: What does your workbenches look like?
I am getting ready to add a tool tray to my bench. What don't you like about yours? . I am a more of a do it yourself person and a hobbyist woodworker. I tend to do what it takes to get the job done as appose to a hand tool guy. The tool tray is a chip and sawdust magnet I am forever cleaning it ou...

That is a really nice bench for $100. As for the tool tray, why not just fill it in flush with the bench top?[/quote]
The bench is 7' long 3 in thick made with beech. I would need to take out a loan to fill the tray. Maybe someday.
