Re: control sheaves stuck

Thanks. I was hoping for that. They are not very deep. Should I leave them alone or try sanding them out?

Re: control sheaves stuck

This is what the inside of both sheaves look like. Any reccomendations or thoughts on how this would affect operation?

Re: control sheaves stuck

OK. Got the sheaves separated but upon inspection they appear to look pitted inside in some areas. It doesn't look like corrsion but rather bad casting or machining when made. Is this normal and will it affect operation?

Re: control sheaves stuck

Thanks for all your advice. I have everything stripped out of headstock. Will try the atf/acetone method and just wait. I assume 24 hrs. should be enough for it to work. Hopefully I can nudge them apart with damaging. I guess patience is the best cure. There was a lot of rust all over this machine a...

This time I bought a rusted mess and the found that nothing rotated, but the motor did hum. This is my first teardown. Pulled motor and and it runs fine but the upper control sheaves are ...

Curious about prices

Just wondering why Shopsmith Mark V's are so cheap to buy used. I see these all the time on ebay and sites like Craigslist and Offer Up for $200. I've even bought one for $100 with 3 band saws and a belt sander included. Only needed a new belt. I remember paying over $1200 in the late 70's. Why so l...

Re: Quill feed lock

Thanks for all the help. It was a stupid mistake on my part when reassembling. I had the quill stop lock wing on the quill feed side and the feed lock wing on the stop lock. I reversed and it now works. Sliding the knurled silver ring in took out all the play in the quill spindle. It was a pain gett...

Quill feed lock

I recently picked up a late 70's Mark V 500 and after a good cleaning it seems to run well. My only problem seems to be that the quill feed will not lock when extended. The quill stop works good but I just can't lock its position anywhere. The lock handle turns in all the way but does not lock the f...
