Hey Kevin,
Good words.
I've been told that it was a start capacitor, but it doesn't really matter since David clarified (and I confirmed visually) that new Emerson motors have the needed capacitor built-inside the motor's casing.

Re: Do Std Shopsmith motors (the Emerson's) Come with Capacitors
David, I DO see the capacitor inside the motor's casing. Tx. I have an additional question. The shape of the motor casing's bottom is rounded on the new Emerson but my old motor & bottom half of head stock from the WoodMaster have a very flat bottom. (Please see photos from prior correspondence....

Re: Do Std Shopsmith motors (the Emerson's) Come with Capacitors
Tx for your helpful reply, David. I am NOT reusing my bored-out sheaves. The new motor came with a pair of sheaves already pre-mounted on the shaft. I will check out the "peep holes" to find capacitor tomorrow. Usually these motor capacitors are pretty big (see photo of outside of my old m...

Do Std Shopsmith motors (the Emerson's) Come with Capacitors
I just bought a replacement 1-1/8 HP Emerson motor from eBay to replace my existing one. I noted that there was no capacitor mounted to outside of my motor like my original motor. The eBay vendor couldn't tell me 1) if there's a start-up capacitor built inside the motor's casing or 2) whether these ...

Re: New Speed Control's jam nut set screw accommodates 1/8" Allen wrench--not slot for screwdriver
Actually, I wasn't asking about whether to go for it or not; I was letting others know that the published info is out of date compared to latest manufactured part.
Thanks.
Thanks.

New Speed Control's jam nut set screw accommodates 1/8" Allen wrench--not slot for screwdriver
I am trying to make adjustments to the high-speed setting on my SS Mark V and discovered this inconsistency Many articles say to: “ Use a small screwdriver to hold the set screw, then loosen the jam nut. If the high speed stop engaged before the drive belt was near the edge of the motor pulley, turn...

Instructions to shut Shopsmith on high-speed setting during speed control adjustment
To set the high speed setting, I’ve read several articles (including the one at your linked “ http://www.songofthegreatlakes.com/sshighspeed.htm ) that instructs to shut off the machine at the high speed setting (make adjustments to the high speed setting via the jam nut and worm shaft), and then tu...

Misc details about Mark V headstock
These are questions that have perplexed me for a while, so now I'm getting around to asking you Shopsmith experts: 1. There are 2 small prongs on the external face of the quadrant assembly. Is the purpose of these to give a resting place for the head of the dial spring or are they for something else...
