Re: Do I need to Replace my Bearings?

I reconditioned a radial arm saw motor bearing a while back using that technique, and it worked out well. When I researched electric motor grease, Mobil Polyrex EM was generally touted as the primo stuff. A tube is about $9 at Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Mobil-Polyrex-Electric-Bearing-Grease-x/d...

Re: Do I need to Replace my Bearings?

Chriss, just replace the bearings. They are are not that expensive. You have the machine apart so do it now. 60 year old bearings (even Fafnir) probably should be replaced regardless "how they feel". I always replace the bearings in the 10ER's I overhaul. That is including the motor. Any ...

Re: Do I need to Replace my Bearings?

Ball bearings are NOT supposed to 'spin freely'. Rotate easily, but not spin. There should be some grease in them that causes them to be somewhat viscous. IF they 'spin freely', the grease has disappeared. Yes that grease can get gummed up as you described. IIWM, I would go forward and NOT replace ...

Do I need to Replace my Bearings?

A few months ago I started pulling apart the 10ER my grandpa gave me. You guys gave me some good advice and help with that. Thanks. I've been on hold for a while, but got back at cleaning it up this weekend. The quill, drive splines, bearings, pinion, etc. were all pretty gummed up with some sticky ...

After some time away from this working on other projects, I'm getting back to cleaning these parts up. What is best to use for degreasing all these parts?

Re: 10ER Quill Binding

The drive sleeve should be a slip fit in the headstock, but when I took mine out I had to put a large wood dowel in from the quill end and tap it out with a hammer. Some one had put a sticky tar like substance on it and that resisted removal. If yours has that as well a bit of heat might help to so...

Re: 10ER Motor Cleaning and Wiring

Since the motor is likely a 1/2 HP, I think a 14 gauge cord is sufficient if not excessively long. 12-15 ft is adequate IMO. Do use crimped terminals rather than bare wire when terminating. I figure I'll go with a 15 ft cord. Probably just go ahead and get 12 gauge. Yep, I'll use crimped terminals.

Seems simple enough.

Re: 10ER Quill Binding

I did check for that but didn't see a second one. Any chance there is one covered in putty hiding?

Re: 10ER Quill Binding

The grease is probably why it was gummed up. Johnson's paste wax is what you want to use. Absolutely no grease or oil on anything. Yep. I need to pick up some paste wax and some evaporust... Now onto the drive sleeve. Looks like I'm going to need some penetrating oil. I loosened the setscrew, but n...
