I do it a little differently. I use the print screen (prt sc) key to take a screenshot and then I paste (Ctrl V) it into my favorite free picture editing software, Irfan View. You could have anchored it to the wall instead of building a complex tailstock extension. Here is an example of what I think in extraordinary length.

I've had good luck with all of the above (tape, scoring, shallow cut) plus a good sharp plywood blade.

How did the older mortising hold down for the 500 get secured and does anyone know if it can be updated to work with the 510/520 fence? Did you know that SS has an adjustable support leg?
