Re: Do Std Shopsmith motors (the Emerson's) Come with Capacitors

Curious what and with what you would have checked the run/start windings and what values you expected to observe? There are no lack of YouTube vids on checking field coils and armatures. Some of them are rubbish, but when you see the same procedure and advice over and over again, they are most like...

Re: New Owner

Russ, it seems that some old paint finishes were 'hammered' and some were 'crinkled'. There does appear to be a difference upon examining the two side by side. I'm no expert on paint finishes for sure. In fact, I detest any sort of repainting I'm required to do. Hammered paints are way easier to fin...

Re: Do Std Shopsmith motors (the Emerson's) Come with Capacitors

Hey Kevin, Good words. I've been told that it was a start capacitor, but it doesn't really matter since David clarified (and I confirmed visually) that new Emerson motors have the needed capacitor built-inside the motor's casing. Thanks. My ramblings were centered on understanding replacement capac...

If you read all this at once, it almost seems like a time travel paradox....old Internet links.

Re: Do Std Shopsmith motors (the Emerson's) Come with Capacitors

There are two types of motor capacitors; start and run, Replacement capacitors in general these days are smaller in size than the original. Among other values, they are rated in a microfarad 'range'. Start capacitors have a higher microfarad rating than run capacitors. Because of that, run capacitor...

Re: New Shopsmith Owner

Thanks, Russ for the recommendation on HogWinslow 1960's bearing set for sale. And thanks for the tip on pressing the drive sleeve bearings!

Re: Dado blades

Kevin, Like JPG I'm not sure what you are referring to as a center dial indicator for your Model 10ER. Are you referring to the angled center hubs that set the width of cut on the Wobble Dado Blade? As for the Dado Blades there were two types made back in the Model 10era. The 8" Wobble Dado Bl...

Re: Speed changer rpms

Me too and thanks again! Still trying to decide which version to have laminated. Got my speed changer set up today. Very pleased; the belts run cool, with no weird noise/vibrations. I broke the top sheave trying to get it off the headstock drive sleeve. But ironically,to use the HIGH speed setup, I ...

Dado blades

OK, I've got the original dado blades set and center dial indicator for my 10ER. I've never used it, but the machine was stored down in a damp cellar of a commercial building for over 20 yrs before I bought it. Remarkably, it had very little rust and cleaned up nicely(for me). But it had a bench wit...
