After reading the textbook and watching Nick's video I sharpened all my chisels and used Nick's dime method to set up the system. I found the 3/8 easy to use on the maple legs I was working on. I did find it easier after installing the adjustable legs on the table for extra support.

Only was workable if I sharpened the chisel portion of the tool. Even then took way too much pressure to make a decent cut. Back to the old method using this tool only to initiate the cut and set the edges of the mortise. Glad it was given to me and not purchased. I always read the reviews on any new tool, this time to see if I might have been using it wrong.

Just received the set of mortis bits and kit. Right off I realized the mortis bits HAD to be sharpened, they only have a shaped edge, not a sharpened cutting edge. I am a wood carver and know sharp tools. After much time setting up and sharpening each cutter and bit the 3/8 bit cut rather easily in popular wood about as I remember in high school. I am going back with the grinder stone with the set and add buffing compound to the stone to place a polished edge on each cutter which, from experience, should reduce the pressure required considerably. The provided stone is ok for putting an edge on but to make it sharp is going to require a little more. Wish I could get a ceramic stone and with cutting oil it would reduce the resistance even greater. Polished cutting surfaces create much less drag and in this case, a ceramic stone to polish the cutters would be most helpful. I found the bits to be somewhat challenging to sharpen however they require less attention than the cutters.

I have the complete Mortise & Tennon set, Used only once and am finding the Identical results as the prior reviews, Very hard to cut a mortise, Takes too much pressure to cut a starting hole. Something is going to break. Also I feel it is putting too much pressure on the quill. Again my boxes are marked Taiwan. For the $272.00 spent it should be marked USA ( Made in America )

My Dad purchased the Shopsmith back in the 70's. We have moved it back and forth between two homes and been very satisfied with all the attachments we have added over the years. As the other reviewer stated, the mortise attachment(purchased by my Dad) has been unused in the original box for years. I pulled it out and gave it a try last weekend. My test piece was a piece of poplar. I was disappointed as to how much force was needed to make the mortise. I never got the chisel more than a 1/16" into the surface before I gave up. I will sharpen the chisel and try again to see if I have any better luck. Update to follow.

Yesterday, I pulled the 3/8" mortise drill and cutter out of its box and unsealed it. I've had it for years but never used it. Cutting into a pine 2x4, it took a lot of pressure, smoke, and heat. The drill bit does not seem to be sharp. I have a 1/2" drill and cutter that was used once years ago and put back into the box. It will hardly cut at all. Very disappointing.

Well, I have to say I expected more. I was surprised by the amount of pressure that needs to be applied to cut a square hole with a 3/8 bit. Another sad surprise was that the label on the box said "Made in Taiwan". For what I paid, I would have thought that Shopsmith could have found an AMERICAN company to manufacture this thing! Maybe that's part of the reason they bits don't work as well as I expected.
