Differences in Mortising Attachments 500 vs. 510/520

Post by algale »

As currenrly made, the mortising attachment has a hold down that secures to the 520/510 fence via a t-nut and threaded post. How did the older mortising hold down for the 500 get secured and does anyone know if it can be updated to work with the 510/520 fence?

If I am not mistaken, there was a hole in the fence. the hold down simply dropped into the hole and was stable. My 10ER and my 500 are that way.

I'll get some pictures .... :D

You can see the hole in the fence in this image ...

Drill/tap a hole in the end of the mounting post, attach a SS t-nut with a stud. The stud needs to be bottomed out in the tapped hole(to resist backing out later), and just long enough for the t-nut to clamp to the fence slot.

That is more or less what I was thinking, except for the detail of bottoming out the stud, which makes sense now that you mention it.

A comment from the 'devil's advocate.

Are the 510/520 fences stout enough to be used in this manner in lieu of the 500 fence?

Not sure I understand the concern. No one is planning or drilling a hole in the 520 fence; just using a t-nut. This is how is is shown in the Sawdust Session.

I have never used a mortising attachment on the Mark V so I DO NOT speak from experience but only as a skeptic.

There have been several discussion here on the forum where complaints/concerns were voiced regarding the mortising effort. Now it sounds to me as though you might be considering putting together a modified version using the new fence and an old mortising attachment. I am skeptical. Oh, I already said that!

Now why does that not surprise me. :D

The suggested modification to the 500 post creates a post essentially identical to the current version from the mother ship.

The mortising concerns are relevant to the table/trunion rigidity, not the fence.

The mortising hold down for the 500 mounted by insertion into a hole on the top of the fence. It was held in place by a set screw from the side. At least that is how mine works.
