Thanks for all the information!

I check our local tractor supply and they carry 3 different versions of shoes and a better price then at Amazon. I think an outing to the store would answer my questions about how well these might work for the application I have in mind. It twenty some miles away but not in a direct that we normally go.

I do have a few old horse shoes that came in loads of compost we had brought in for our garden boxes many years ago. They are to rusty and in general bad shape to use for this project, as I mentioned they are basically a handle, for a western motif bench.

We do have some race horses that rotate here for a while in the care of one of our boarders who is a groom at the track (Indiana Grand Racing and Casino). I understand that their owners feel that staying here on the farm for a while helps calm them. Those are normally shod.
I have some new shoes here "somewhere"... And I have a collection of old ones, maybe about 100 almost all of which were found here on the farm, almost all out in the fields. I've saved the old ones for years and want to make a display of them on one wall of an old small barn. All hung with the back tips up like a "U" naturally. Wouldn't want them to leak luck. ;)
The shoes from the farm store are pre-punched and are soft enough to drill fine.

.
I always thought you hung them over the entryway doorway so the luck would be spilling out onto anyone walking through your entrance??

When out to see if I could get some eagle pictures but the place I went the whole river was frozen over. Not a small river either, maybe 500 feet or more wide and some decent currents. I've not seen this before in this area. Anyway no open water no eagles.

But since I was out that way I went to the Rural King and picked up a pair of horse shoes. They have a "1" stamped on them which I guess is the size. They were the large of the two they had in stock.
