Fine screws were, indeed, the answer. Got it all assembled last night just in time for my wife's birthday.

Just need to do some sanding to get rid of pencil marks and then put a finish on it..
It has a few flaws, but they are minor. Overall, I'm pleased with it.

I've used a lot pocket screws with plywood, poplar and red oak and no problems. But when I used them with pine I got my first split. I'm using Kreg screws with the washer head. I will be more careful if I use them with pine.

FWIW there are two versions of the kreg pocket screws. The fine thread is for hard woods and the coarse are for soft woods.

I agree with Ed in Tampa. Dowels instead of pockets. Plus the sharp edges of the pockets, on the back side (I suppose) could snag, the quilts.
