I've been using a 8" Forrest Dado king for about fifteen years. I've had no problems, or complaints.

It so happens I just got a reply from Customer Service today on this very question.

I asked, "What's the largest dado blade that should be used with the Shopsmith Mark 7?"

They replied, "You can use an 8-inch but you have a very minimum depth of cut and you will have to make your own insert. As what we sell is for the 6-inch."

Does that agree with the general experience around here?

I have a 8" Infinity Dadonator stacked dado head. My experience does not agree with customer service's comments.

I use a standard Shopsmith dado table insert without incident and can get plenty of depth of cut. I originally feared that if I lowered the table too far the larger dado would interfere with the insert. It doesn't.

I echo Ed's recommendation of 8" if only for the possible future if using a sled. I had some large book case shelves that were best supported by a LARGE sled, however the only way to get a deep enough dado (without using a router) was to change to 8" blades.

I had used A Freud set, however the arbor hole was not very precise and have switched to CMT (not purchased through SS---AFAIK they only sell the 6"). I have since found out from Freud, that they make sets for the European market and if some of those blanks make their way into an imperial set, it causes problems with cuts.

The CMTs are ready for sharpening but the cost is nearly half of the cost of new so I'll probably buy a new set of Infinity and then give the CMTs to someone how is less finicky about tear out.

Also, the SS insert does work with 8" sets, though I've not tried it at full depth cut

Be well,
Ben
