fredsheldon wrote:I was shocked when the chip and dip bowl I donated to our annual Christmas Auction to raise money for some local folks in need sold for $251. Trying to pry $20 out of these State workers is almost unheard of so to watch the bidding war for the bowl reach $250 was very gratifying. You should have seen the expression on the faces of the 20 office mates that I gave bowls to later in the day. Good thing I have an RV since I have 18 more bowls in bags to hand out to family members here in New Orleans on Christmas Day along with all the other presents and luggage we had to pack. I guess this will be my last posting on this thread. I will be starting a new thread documenting my progress with my next year's project, Bandsaw Jewelry Boxes.
Fred, simply amazing! This whole thread has been a great story.

Thanks for all your posts.

Inspiration to us all ...

Post by 2centsworth »

Fred what a wonderful posting start to finish. It should be picked up by a magazine or national wood working program for publication. You are so talented and then some. I can't wait for next years blog. I am not surprised at all that they had a bidding war over your bowls. When I grow up I want to be as good as you ! Keep inspiring us sir !

fredsheldon wrote:I wood(I copied this from another member :)) say that over half of my bowls that I turned from green wet wood had developed movement/cracks as they dried. However, I would always prefer to turn wet wood over dry wood if I had a choice. It is 10 times faster and your tools keep much cooler and don't require sharpening as often. I do have enough left over logs to turn another 15 bowls that have been drying for almost a year now so next year I will probably be using dry wood for any future bowls I turn. I will then see how my Carbide tools hold up to dry wood.

I’ve been quietly reading and returning to this thread since I first happened upon it. It felt like I was learning along with you. I even tried to dry a hunk of log to see what would happen. (Not a good result for various known and, probably, unknown reasons as well).

However it did inspire me to feel less threatened approaching the lathe operation of this machine.

Thanks Mr. Sheldon. It’s been a great ride.
I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for your next foray into the woods.

Ah yeah… Thanks for all of the help offered on these boards during this year, and a very Merry Christmas to one and all of you Smithies.

I cut down the sycamore in the front yard a couple of years ago and just knew I could use some of that wood sometime. Well my youngest daughter called it the family tree because her swing was in it. Well this year I made my oldest daughter a nice bowl from it and that made it mean more since it was part of the family tree.

Nice bowl. You've already got the hang of it. Time to start working on your next year's Christmas presents :)

Dust Collector Modification

Post by fredsheldon »

I found this dust collector at Woodcraft yesterday and modified it to fit my SS inlet hose. I will give it a try this weekend to see how it does when I do some sanding. I had to use a piece of 4" pvc pipe and a 4" to 2" reducer to make it work. http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/200585 ... Stand.aspx

I had to use some Loctite Polyseamseal to fill the gap between the reducer and elbow connector for the hose. It was a loose fit.

A perfect fit on this end, no sealer required.

I hope this keeps the lint and dust from flying all over my garage.

dust collector hood

Post by RobertTaylor »

I recommend a piece of half inch square hole hardware cloth to cover the front. I just bent the top over and hook it on. You will quickly find out that the dust collect will only suck in "new" sandpaper, not nearly worn out pieces. My camera is at work so I can't get a pic today.

Worth a try....

Post by 2centsworth »

Darn Fred I was just trying to figure out how to use the 4 inch hood to go on the end of the DC3300 hose. Next time I'm calling you first. You seem to be one step ahead of most of us when it comes to these things. I'm coming over to see this soon. :D
