Moms' Day Build

Post by fiatben »

My mom needed something over the head of her bed to put little stuff. I built this little set of shelves with drawers:

The case is 7/8" cherry and the drawers are maple with walnut fronts. I kept the design very basic, using dowels to join the uprights to the shelves, and the drawers just slide into place.

I am going to attach it to the wall with 3/8" hanger bolts driving into the studs and carefully fitted to holes drilled in the back, with silicon to secure it and yet allow future removal if necessary.

Looks great! Cherry and walnut? I like the mix, whatever it is.

The drawer boxes are about 1/4" undersized. The bottom drawer just slides on the bottom shelf and the top rides on a couple of wooden rails made from scrap pieces of the cherry. The critical dimensions came in getting the rails at the right height and fastening the uprights in the right places so that the walnut false fronts fill the space.

The overall unit is only 30" long and each drawer is only about 6 x 6 x 2.5" in height (3" high face). Again, very basic techniques, minimal costs. I had the cherry and some thin stock walnut/maple. Biggest costs were the 4 knobs and 4 hanger bolts.
