another idea to eliminate the "ring of death"

As I'm reading thru this thread, being a poor woodturner who must make do with homemade rigs to substitute for the expensive lathe accessories I lust for, I had the thought that the material is sufficiently thick (strong) enough and you have a great machine for boring, so why not drill into the loose half and fix it to screw/bolt to the fixed half. I envision everything from a simple pair of deck screws to having nuts embedded in fixed part and bolts pulling the loose part down tight. Maybe I'll go try this myself.
