I've been woodworking 20 yrs and just inherited a Mark 5. The lower blade guard was not attached but was included with the machine. When I attach the lower guard and then try to mount the arbor and blade, the blace would be perfectly aligned with the outside of the lower guard. I have tried for over a week to see what is wrong. Guess its time to ask for some more experience help. It looks like it would fit if I took off the silver aluminum collar but I don't think that's the problem. If it helps any, the serial number is 12183 and the model is 505644.
Thanks,
Assembfurn

Welcome to the family. It is always good to gain another new member. I apologize for not jumping in here to answer your questions but I do not have that model and can not. The images that you show seem to show a different lower blade guard than I have.

I have attached a reference chart that details the production schedule for older model Mark V/5s.

Can you post an image of the name plate and serial number plate.

1) The arbor is the longer version intended to be used on a 505/510/520 model(larger tables etc.)

2) You have a 500(the carriage tells the tale) which requires a much shorter arbor. The blade is then actually inside the end of the quill shaft.

3) The important difference is that the blade is 3/8" closer to the quill end of the arbor on the shorter '500' version.

Hey! There IS a difference between 'I think' and 'is'.;)

The overall length(shorter) is not relevant to his problem. The quill end to blade spacing 'is'.:)

Also a difference between 'I believe you have' and 'you have'.

He needs to know the arbor is not intended for use on his model. The saw guard is just one problem using that longer arbor will create.:)

PAX Citizen!

In Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone a spacer is described for using the metal lower saw guard on a model 500 with dado blades. This moves the end panel of the guard over by 1 1/4". I don't know if this is appropriate for the issue at hand, but one could check with Customer Service:

Guard Spacer (Mark V with Metal Lower Saw Guard Only)- Because the dado accessory can be used for extra-wide cuts, you must place a spacer (offered free through Customer Service) between the two halves of the lower saw guard. If you want to make a spacer, remove the cover from the guard and trace its contour on a piece of 1-1/4" stock that measures 3-1/2" wide by 10" long. Mark the location of the bolt holes and then draw another line parallel to the first one but about 1/4" smaller. Cut the stock on a bandsaw or scroll saw, and drill 9/32" holes for the attachment bolts. When you are finished, the spacer should look like the one shown in Figure 3-23. Secure the spacer between the two halves of the lower saw guard with 1/4"-20 x 1-3/4" bolts
