Old Shopmate Dust Collector Model AE-0134

I have an old Shopsmith dust collector, which is really just a shop vac. I've had it since the early 1980's. Shopsmith no longer supports it.

The original foam filter has degenerated. Does anyone know an alternative for the filter? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Janet Brewer

I haven't looked at other brands yet. I was hoping someone could tell me what might fit.

If you contact Shop-Vac, they can tell you which of their filters to buy to fit your unit. I own the same unit.

If Shop-Vac comes thru for you, you may as well ask if the optional cloth pre-filter and heavy wire cage is still available for your unit.
I too have the ShopSmith Shopmate DCS (AE0133) and got it with the optional filter. It was worth the extra cost, as the foam filter doesn't get beat up as much and is still in fine shape (as of a week ago).
The unit as is with the both filters performs far better than 'just' a shop vac (I haven't needed another system yet). I think the ShopMate was a bit ahead of its time.

Good luck!

Just a thought, in case the Shop-Vac people can't help (although the "Foam Sleeve" 95-85-00 looks promising), perhaps a 'regular' vacuum cleaner filter bag could be adapted. The filter cage is no doubt too large for a typical bag input "valve", but one could cut a hole in a bag and zip-tie it to the cage frame. Might actually be better than the foam.
And dang, I might try it myself...

Could you let us know if Shop-Vac comes through?
Thanks.

Another comment to add: You can cut the legs off a pair of women's panty hose (knot the legs at the "body part") and pull the hose up over the paper filter & secure with the rubber band. It will add extra life to your filter. Suction still is excellent.

I have the same unit. I also have just a cheap Shop-vac and the paper filter from the Shop-vac does fit on the Shopsmith unit. I assume that the foam filter would also. But I will double check on that. Don't want to assume anything. I will get the information off of the shop-vac that I have when I get home this evening.
