Re: Truing, As Best You Can, Shopsmith Table Tops

Flat or not flat, or how flat or not? Seems it may be a simple matter of 'tolerance'. No, not 6 thou or 11, or thou per foot or whatever, but how tempting is it to reach for the 8 pound Persuader when checking table alignments. The best I got mine was about where Dusty has his Main- high point near ...

Re: Zyliss Vise

I have had one of these for years, it came in a cardboard box. I have not used it very much. . And not just 'any' cardboard box! Is this irony, er whut-- that original 'box', muchly patched, taped and repaired, became a "tote" for a variety of small clamps, while the Zyliss remained out a...

Re: Zyliss Vise

If you don't already have one of these, I highly recommend that you get one. I have had mine for years and I tend to take it for granted; using it only as a simple bench vise. That changed yesterday simply because we bought a new TV and a DVD/Video Cassette Recorder. If you get one, I guarantee tha...

Re: Alternative Edge Guide for a Circular Saw

I have trouble even with something like that. I mean, I can hit a bird in flight with a stone, but I can't cut a straight line with a circ saw. Go figure! So I consider a circ saw just a faster way to make a hand saw cut. Then clean up edges with a plane, as usual. Sorta like bandsaw, same same- cut...

'Directing' from behind perhaps, but not leading.

But then Nelson Mandela did pretty well from isolation.
Not "leading from behind", but in re the White House traitor-in-residence it is "leading from his behind" .

Re: Combination Square Woes

and I guess I missed the earlier post where you mentioned the Wixey. THANK you for that, btw. I've been avoiding the idea because I'd not previously seen a positive review. But now I am on the hunt for a digital protractor on sale. (tho I can't imagine actually giving up use of the traditional squar...

[I have made up two blocks that bridge the bench tubes and have a hole to accept a threaded rod (see attached image for clarification). I use the threaded rod to lend stability to the table. I also use it as a micro-adjuster, along with a Wixey Angle Gauge, when tilting the table to a critical sett...

Re: ripping and crosscut blade settings

Whatever you do, it can be hazardous. Keep your wit about you and do not work with distractions in the shop! I agree that more exposure can equal less tearout. I operate somewhat like Dusty (w/ more exposure). I also agree it is more dangerous, bringing up a conclusion born of experience and deep t...
