Totally agree. I take the whole thing out on the driveway. I run at the slowest shopsmith setting and the grinder on. Make sure you spark out, and always cool the piece to check dimensions. Grinding will cause you to overshoot about .001 if you measure warm.

Here was my idea: http://www.shopsmith.net/forums/showthread.htm?t=6977 Brass, alum and plastic only. You will need to make the table shown as well as mount a cross slide vice. But, yes it can be done. Make a tool post style grinder and you can do steel all day just not in the way you think. The gri...

I feel you nuhobby. I may have started the same way. May being the operative term. I joined machinist web in support of tools4cheap.com. They had a bunch of parts and the forum was a bonus. The spindle may not be bent. It's normal for threaded chucks to stick in place over time. You will find putting a di on the spindle nose and rotating the spindle by hand will give you a better idea. Nu, it has begun. Just watch. I was perfectly content in my furniture building world. I believe I even posted my last piece before I got my South Bend 9. From there it was downhill fast. It's a fun ride though, and I can make a ton of stuff now, but you guys haven't seen me post one furniture piece ...

That looks like an old craftsman. If you plan to escape from it do it now, before it's too late. Once you get started on it your woodworking will become quite scarce. The metal lathe will lead to a new addiction, followed by the need for more metal working machines, followed by welding to make those...

Well, with shipping, most stuff I got was comparable to SS pricing. Your luck has obviously been better.
