Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue

Tunnel vision is a mind narrowing hazard. One must realize there is no "one" correct anything. A decision must always include consideration of alternate methods. Everyone has a different set of 'assets' to work with so only they can determine the 'best path'. Now here is where tunnel visi...

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Shopsmith, Inc. Has A New Owner

**Hmm. Here's a thought. Maybe SS could buy up used machines and 1. reduce their in-built competition, and 2. offer "factory certified" refurbs for sale. Would you be tempted by a like-new, factory-warranted "vintage" SS for half the price of a new machine? Yep, I would consider...

Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue

Would love to hear of experiences from others with horizontal boring for large panels, or any other joinery method you want to mention here. Also, if anyone has had great luck with large panels without joinery, it would be useful to hear of those experiences as well. Just a second thought or two to...

Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue

For those who deem this easy on a Mark V, perhaps you can give all of your best tips to the OP on this thread because I wouldn't even attempt this myself given some of the caveats with horizontal boring on a Mark V. Well, I don't claim to have done a lot of doweling on the Mark V, but over the year...

Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue

In the meantime, what I have now is bar clamps and pipe clamps. How can I make these work? Pete: Here is a photo clipped from a Fine Woodworking article on clamping. In the picture you can see that the cauls span the boards that are being edge joined and downward pressure on the cauls is being appl...

Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue

What are your recommendations for glueing the boards together and keeping them flat? What type of clamps should I be using? Are there clamping techniques that work best? The key to keeping panel glue-ups flat is using cauls with the clamps. The clamps apply pressure across the joint and the cauls a...

Re: Looking for advice, horizontal boring, edge joining with dowels and glue

One does not need to use dowels to make a cutting board or a table top. In fact, it is probably a waste of time and effort. As long as your edges are well jointed, glue is all you need. Doweling is for reinforcing joinery where things come in at (usually) right angles. It is an alternative to morti...
