Re: Moving from CA to CO

Move complete. Once we finish un-packing and getting everything where we want it, I can start setting up the shop. SS appears to have transited just fine.

Re: Moving from CA to CO

Well the mover's (Colonial contracting with a private local Lombardi Moving and Storage. I have to say, they were GREAT!) picked up everything. It is being shipped in one piece top loaded on an upper deck so nothing stacked on top of it. All tables and attachments were dis-assembled and boxed (I nee...

Re: Updated Dust collection (Thein Baffle)

The chips in that barrel are actually from a hand plane used to slightly round off the sharp corners from the the stave construction. Just regular vacuuming of the shop floor. No reason a Jointer with dust collection would not work as well.

Updated Dust collection (Thein Baffle)

I should have done this years ago. I finally got tired of the dust clogging up my filter. The barrel is stave construction from some left over pine shelving I wanted to get rid of. 2017-06-29 07.23.04 (Custom).jpg 2017-06-29 07.23.14 (Custom).jpg Here is the baffle, you can also see weather strippin...

Re: Moving from CA to CO

They must have changed the rules then (JFTR). When I was moving around (1985-2000) I could NOT select my carrier. Not sure who we'll use for the upcoming move yet. I've had Mayflower, North American, Bekins, and others I can't even remember including an English company (England back to US) and a Tur...

Re: Moving from CA to CO

Oh, I'm no stranger to the moving process. Active Duty Air Force for 15 years. The longest I was ever lived in one place was in England. 18 Months on the economy, 22 Months Base Housing at RAF Lakenheath. So I know all about box labeling and not releasing an agent of the company until we have unpack...

Re: Pen and/bowl turning

moderately well balanced bowl blanks 6-8 inches can be turned without a speed reducer. Larger than that or poorly balanced I do reccomend a speed reducer. I had the opportunity to borrow a speed reducer and loved it for large bowls. For pens, the SS is a great lathe. I use the Mandrel from Penn Stat...

Moving from CA to CO

I'm finally preparing my escape from CA. I will have a mover NOT moving myself. Questions on moving the SS should I leave it all assembled and let the movers take care of it? Should I disassemble for the movers to handle the individual pieces? Additional comments and insights are appreciated as well.

Re: Now for the scraps !

No such thing as scraps in my shop, just progressively smaller cut offs and eventually waste.

Re: Green or seasoned

The only instance where green wood is preferable is when making bowls. Then it need be dried prior to final 'dimensioning'. Table tops - seasoned(dry) fer sure. Then it still may warp as internal stresses are 'altered' by sawing. Or in the case of bowls, you go ahead with the final dimension (wall ...
