The way I do it is to lay it out on the computer how I want it to look. Then reverse the image/letters. Then print it on a lazer printer. Place it face down on the work and then use an iron on it. I have used used lamp oil with paraffin in it and it works well. I have also used the following product:

it has worked very well also to keep my table saw rust free.
