Re: Lathe Height

Using the rule of thumb for lathe height to hold your arms at your sides and bend your arm from the elbow 90 degrees, your hand should be level with the center of the spindle. For me then, the center of the spindle will be 47 inches off the ground as my arms at my side bent at the elbow 90 is 47 in...

I already use the Easy Wood round tip, but maybe the lathe speed is too slow. This is for an item that has already been final shaped on the outside, and ...

A couple of turning questions

A couple of questions for the hollow form turners. First, how do you sand way down in the bottom of your hollow forms? This past weekend I started making a beer mug out of an 8" length 4"x4" maple spindle stock. My fingers can reach only so deep, so I tried wrapping some sandpaper aro...

I had found those plans sometime back. I used them to provide "inspiration" for my under Shopsmith cabinet as I also did not like having the cabinet attached to the Shopsmith. With the Shopsmith fully lowered with the legs on the ground, there is just a little bit of clearance between the ...

I'm no expert but he other markings look like mineral deposits or slight bark enclusions. Are they the secondary figure you are talking about? The piece turned out very nice overall. If you see the lines that are the grain of the wood, you will notice there is some kind of wavy pattern that runs 90 d...

It looks to me like you got really lucky and have a tree of "curly maple" wood. Here is a site with lots of photos of curly maple and other figured woods for sale. As you can see, it is considerably more valuable than ordinary hardwood lumber. They claim that such figuring occurs in less ...
