Re: Raising Shopsmith Taller

A couple of things- I have several Shopsmiths so I don’t have to constantly raise and lower the machine to do other functions. So I don’t have to saw at a higher level. Because I have limited space in my basement there are times when I do have to take it off the platforms to store it aside. The mach...

Re: Request Help with Speed Control Issues

Thank you for your insight and suggestions but I’m stopping here. The speeds I have available are good enough to run my sanding station. I have other Mark Vs to do the other functions.
Thanks again.

Re: Speed Reducer

This video shows the inside of the reducer.

Also, there’s a person on eBay who claims to repair these speed reducers.

Re: Request Help with Speed Control Issues

In response to one idea-I’ve put in a new quadrant and worm gear. So I have good meshing there. I, too, questioned my tach so I tested it. It’s a Harbor Freight photo style. I compared it’s readings with readings from a tach that’s a magnetic style. With 6 data points they where + or - 25 rpm apart....

Re: Raising Shopsmith Taller

This is what I did. Used 2x6s. The pads on the bottom are to compensate for unevenness of the floor. I put these handles on the ends to help lift the SS on and off the blocks. $matches[2] $matches[2] ACD86314-EE68-4364-8E3F-50D73534BED5.jpeg I’m 6’ 2” and this added 4 1/2” helps with the neck and ba...

Re: Request Help with Speed Control Issues

It’s the same belt in all the pics in my last post. That belt is the new replacement belt that measures over 1/2”.

Re: Request Help with Speed Control Issues

Two things. I think I bought the OEM belt from Shopsmith back when they were selling belts that were smaller than spec. This belt measures less than 1/2” wide. I’ve been told this is too small and should be replaced. I bought the replacement belt from a third party who got them from Shopsmith. This ...

Re: Request Help with Speed Control Issues

Well, I forgot. The large lady hasn’t sung yet. JPG had said earlier there were too many variables. How true. We resolved just one of them. I had left my headstock open while we worked this issue. Because it was over I wanted to close it up. But part of that was to replace the belt from the OEM one ...

Re: Request Help with Speed Control Issues

I’m always disappointed when I read a thread and the postings stop in the middle of solving a problem without a successful solution. I always wonder if the original poster died, simply lost interest, found a solution independent of this forum or forgot what he was doing. So I want to close out this ...

Re: Request Help with Speed Control Issues

Well, the good, the bad and the ugly. JPG is spot on. For whatever reason I had an “idler” sheave on the motor shaft. To add visuals to his observation I have these pics. $matches[2] $matches[2] 28CF9400-D26D-448E-9A38-0F4510BE4A91.jpeg With a new floating sheave and the OEM belt I ran the machine a...
