rubber 'seal'?

I have a SS 510 that I bought used about a year ago. I have recently noticed a rubber 'seal'? on one of the main horizontal tubes. It is about .080 thick (guessing) and 2-3 inches wide. I have a Shopsmith 510. I have not used the lathe yet. I am interested in turning some small things, pens, bottle stoppers, etc. Can I do it on my Shopsmith? I only have the spur drive center.
