Re: Trying to date my 10ER

Thanks John and Ed. The only dated document that came with my machine is a Magna catalog dated Feb 52. It doesn't look like anyone has upgraded or repaired this 10ER. All of the parts are consistent with a date of late 1952 to early 1953. Someday I'll check with the lady who inherited it from the or...

Trying to date my 10ER

I'm trying to figure out when my 10ER (S/N 86645) was manufactured. It has hollow table support tubes and thick way tubes. I've seen conflicting information about the dates that different features were introduced. A document on the 10ER Yahoo group site says Sept 1952 hollow table support tubes Feb ...

Re: Beginning to remove the rust from my 10ER

While waiting for batch number three to come out of the Evapo-Rust, I started cleaning up the aluminum knobs. I used 320-grit Dremel abrasive buffs in my flex shaft. Knobs that I haven't done yet on the left, cleaned knobs on the right.

Re: Beginning to remove the rust from my 10ER

Thanks, Ron. It looks like your car jack works well. My jack isn't easy to get to. It is hidden in a compartment under my trunk, under a lot of junk. And although it's been years since I had to change a tire, Murphy's law dictates that if I don't have the jack in my car, I will get a flat. Maybe I'l...

Re: Beginning to remove the rust from my 10ER

Thanks Russ and Everett! I've downloaded "Got Rust?" and will try the trick of raising the machine to the drill press position and soaking the arbor and spindle in Evapo-Rust to get the set screw out. That's the one piece that I've failed to budge so far. Here's a before and after photo fr...

Re: Beginning to remove the rust from my 10ER

Wow- the parts look great. Looks like Evapo is a good choice for rust removal. Hope you show more pics during the process. This is a very informative topic. Thanks for sharing! Travis, Freeport FL Thank you! This is the first time I've used Evapo-Rust, and I'm surprised by how well it worked. I was...

Beginning to remove the rust from my 10ER

I've removed the rust from 8 small parts so far. I used a wire wheel on my flex shaft to remove the paint splatters and loose rust, and then soaked them for 7 hours in Evapo-Rust. You can see the results for four of them in the pic.

Re: What is this part?

You are correct. Although it may fit on the Shopsmith's 5/8" reverse tapered spindle the arbor is not a Shopsmith arbor. It has two set screws and with one exception all Shopsmith Arbors, Spindles, Chucks etc. ever made that attach to the Shopsmith's spindle have only a single set screw. The e...

What is this part?

This keyless chuck came with my 1952 Shopsmith 10ER. I don't think it's a Shopsmith part, is it? The chuck is smaller than a Jacobs chuck, about 1 3/4" long by 1 1/4" wide. What would a Shopsmith owner have used this for?
