3 year follow-up . I ended up buying another quill on eBay. Unit had sat upright for years as the previous owner only used it as a drill press. Maybe it was simply worn out.

How to fix quill
My early greenie quill comes out as seen in the picture. It can be pushed back in and will rotate okay. For now I am only running the bandsaw at low speed. I would appreciate any advice. Specifically, what part do I need to replace to fix this issue? I need to set it upright to use as a drill press ...

Sorry I left that detail out, the return spring was still engaged. Seems to be working fine now. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for all your help. I used Jacob Anderson's YouTube video as a guide. Visual inspection didn't reveal any problems to me. My guess is the set screw either worked loose or I loosened it by mistake when I took the headstock apart to install new belts (I know better now). I filled the set screw A...

I'm fairly new to ShopSmith, having just bought a '54 Greenie last fall. I was using it in the drill press position yesterday and the quill came crashing down onto the piece I was drilling.
