Re: need advice:type of wood to use, sunroom ceiling?

RFGuy, you raise really good points that I had not considered. I should not assume once the screen stiles are pulled up that there is no underlying problem. I will be prepared for that conversation with the window company who will do the install. The construction of the large cedar sun room enclosur...

Re: need advice:type of wood to use, sunroom ceiling?

The 5' runners are the stiles for the screens. There is no need for a rail top or bottom. They sit on top of the window frame stiles that hold the window panes in. They slide in and out via the common rabbet in both stiles. They are permanently exposed to weather.

need advice:type of wood to use, sunroom ceiling?

I have a sunroom that projects out much like a giant bay window. The ceiling glass panes (5) are angled about 30 degrees and have wood runners between each pane. The runners are dual 2x4x5' and stacked and angled at same 30 degrees. The upper runner has an undercut rabbet for sun screens to slide in...

Re: Storm windows- need master advice

yes, that is a good suggestion, but I do not have a rabbet plane. For the smaller windows, I used a block plane to both inside edges of stiles. Then I made comparable width reduction in the rabbet on both sides. For the rabbet edge I used the Shopsmith table saw. I started the rip cut with window to...

Re: Storm windows- need master advice

While I mentioned bridle joints (glued) hold the four corners they do not come into play with the 2/16" reduction procedure I have to execute. The reduction will only be on the left or right stile (choose one) section between the top and base rail. What I did not say is the length. I have two s...

Storm windows- need master advice

I could use some master advice. I have built and glued wood framing members for a bunch of spanish cedar storm windows. The four corners are connected by bridle joints. Photos attached. There is a rabbet on the inside edge of both stiles for the track to seat. There are vinyl tracks that sit on the ...

Re: DC3300 leaking dust

In case this helps someone, I had two occasions when the bag slipped over time from the retaining ring and spewed out dust. I adopted a new procedure which has prevented another occurrence. When I reinstall the 3300 bag, I first wipe clean the flange on the main housing and then install 1" widt...
