Re: Planer Woes... Cutter Head Bearings

The saw blade is being driven (versus providing the power) and again in line and concentric to the power source. Also, the headstock quill has a reverse Morse taper to it (notice the flat has a triangular shape), so that in the even the screw does back out, the taper will stop it.

Re: Planer Woes... Cutter Head Bearings

I have a dumb question to ponder. I think it is correct that the input shaft is milled with both a flat and a keyway so the planer can be mounted as a stand alone or mounted so it can be driven directly by the SS power head, But  , when using the planer why does the pulley come loose when...

Re: Planer Woes... Cutter Head Bearings

I took it for granted that you guys knew better than me; I'm a relative newbie to all things Shopsmith. I didn't realize my planer had both until I took the drive hub off to install the pulley. I had been wondering why there are two different parts explosions/lists for the mounted vs. the pro and th...

Re: Planer Woes... Cutter Head Bearings

crosscreekcraig Do not run your planer under any circumstances with the upper pulley set screw set to the flat on the shaft. Trust me from experience, it will not stay tight. It will come loose and in short order. Since you have put your new pulley on with a 3/16" key and set the lock screw to...

Re: Planer Woes... Cutter Head Bearings

Thanks, JPG. I got a new machine key today (they have them in the hardware section at the Blue Box FYI) and mounted the pulley "correctly". Honed the knives, waxed the table, "dialed in"the the rollers and she's race-ready now! Err, she would be if she had wheels; still waiting f...

Planer Woes... Cutter Head Bearings

Hi All! I put my Mark V/7 mounted planer on a pro planer bench with motor, and ordered the planer pulley upgrade from SS. The pulleys finally arrived today and got everything installed. I haven't run the planer in a while and it's an older one that I bought used a few years ago. Now my cutter head b...
