Just a clarification- Shopsmith sells aluminum oxide sanding belts for the belt sander up to 320 grit.

Bandsawn into smaller blanks, with the splits filled with turquoise or something, it looks like it would make a nice set of matched bottle stoppers (4) or pens(8).

I just put sections of 4x4 under the legs when necessary. Quick and easy. For a 6" height increase, you might want to build 6x6" (x 30" long) boxes to put under each end.

Mineral oil is also a petroleum oil. Watch out for mineral oil sold in pharmacies, some have fragrances added to make your skin smell better when it's used as a skin lotion.
