Sawing is basic to woodworking. Virtually all projects begin by ripping (cutting lengthwise to a specified width) and crosscutting (cutting across the grain to a specified length) the components to size. Make a mistake here and it will haunt you again and again as your work progresses. A top-quality table saw is the best all-around machine for producing the clean, straight cuts you need to achieve the results you want.
The Shopsmith Table Saw is well-equipped to help you tackle this task…and lots more. Set the Variable Speed Dial to match your speed to the thickness and the wood species you're cutting (700 - 5200 RPM). The MARK V's 10" diameter blade and enclosed motor provide ample depth-of-cut capacity…plus over two horsepower of raw sawing muscle to zip through stock up to 3-1/4" thick. The main saw table tilts up to 45o for beveling or cutting compound miters, then locks into the selected angle on dual trunions (one on each end of the table) with a single, quarter-turn lever. Two T-shaped miter gauge slots are provided to enable right or left-handed sawing. A simple turn of the geared, rack-and-pinion handwheel mechanism moves the table up or down, adjusting your depth-of-cut.
Its table system can be expanded to an amazing 102", side-to-side…with a ripping capacity of 50" by using the standard extension tables that come with your MARK V. That's more than enough to rip a full sheet of plywood in half and well beyond the ability of most table saws, without optional extensions!
The MARK V's quill micro-feed feature allows micro-adjustments of the saw blade for precision rip cuts or "shaving" dado slots or grooves.
Safety is an especially important consideration that Shopsmith takes quite seriously! The MARK V rip fence slides over the full width of the table system and offers a dual clamping system to lock it firmly into position at both the infeed and outfeed ends. The squeeze-type safety grip on the miter gauge clamps the workpiece firmly to the miter gauge bar during the cut, keeping the hands out of harm's way and providing added precision, as well.
A fully enclosed lower saw guard covers the blade under the table. Above the table, a clear plastic upper guard lets you see the cut and channels sawdust back to the lower guard dust chute. A European-style riving knife prevents the kerf from closing on the blade while twin cam-style pawls keep both halves of the cut from kicking-back. When you need them, Shopsmith offers an extensive assortment of accessories to increase the versatility of your Shopsmith Table Saw. Among these are: dado blades, molding heads & cutters, special table inserts, outboard support tables, miter gauge accessories, sliding crosscut tables, tenoning jigs and more.
